description: The primary objective of the present study was that of determining whether the six types of schizophrenia described by Beck in his monograph also occurred in other populations of schizophrenic patients. The present study is conceived of as such a validating situation, since it applies the same methodology as that used in Beck's study to another population of schizophrenic patients. The original trait sample consisted of 120 separate items. The adequacy of this initial trait sample has been under constant scrutiny. The need for a much broader sample of personality traits has been recognized. The majority of the patients studied and reported on in Beck's monograph were ambulatory during their course of treatment at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago. Of the six types originally described by Beck, four were found in the present population of schizophrenic patients: S-1, S-3, SR-1, and SR-2. Two additional types, A1-B1 and C-1, were found in the present study which could not be adequately described in terms of any of the previously established six types. A third type, B1-C1, was found to be identical to C-1. Of the six original types, only two, S-2 and S-G, are not found i n the present population of patients. However, S-G is a pattern which Beck found only in children. Since the population of the present study includes only adults, we would expect that S-G would not be identified.
