description: This paper evaluates Malaysian export structure and investigates how export expansion, export composition, export diversification and export instability have affected Malaysian economic performance over the period 1970-99. The results indicate that manufacturing export expansion and export specialization have promoted economic growth over the period of analysis. However, the paper concludes that the expansion of all exports, keeping the share of manufacturing exports to total exports constant, may not be favourable to Malaysian long-run economic performance. Instability in export composition is also a cause for concern. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
