A full interpretation of high temperature behaviour of these alloys depends on a knowledge of the volume fraction of gamma' phase as a function of temperature. A new miniaturised testing machine was used to measure the temperature dependence of the resistivity of a CMSX4 superalloy. Resistivity increased to a maximum at about 650-700 deg C and thereafter decreased as the temperature was incresed. The decrease was modelled using an Arrhenius equation and used to calculate a plot of gamma' volume fraction versus temperature. It was concluded that resistivity measurements provide a simple technique for monitoring changes in gamma' volume fraction with temperature. This knowledge is essential for the interpretation of high temperature mechanical tests. The gamma prime volume fraction at room temperature was estimated to be about 0.75 using a thermodynamic database. The same database was used to calculate the variation in gamma prime volume fraction for comparison with the data obtained from the resistivity measurements. It was found that measurements of electrical resistivity could be used to follow the evolution of gamma' volume fraction with temperature in a CMSX4 single crystal superalloy. The experimetal equipment required is fairly simple to use and the method should be effective in obtaining similar data on other Ni base superalloys.
