This scientific legacy leaves no doubt that SBME technology works to fulfill educational goals under the right conditions: (1) coupled with mastery learning and deliberate practice, (2) using competent faculty, (3) with curriculum integration and institutional endorsement, and (4) receiving healthcare system acceptance. This research qualifies as translational science because results achieved in the educational laboratory transfer to improved downstream patient care practices and better patient and public health (McGaghie 2010). In this issue of Medical Teacher, Schreuder et al. (2011) advance the SBME research agenda via a research synthesis about minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
