The authors used a variety of techniques, ranging from quantifying rood exudates to metagenome sequencing in natural soil, to demonstrate the role of an exuded coumarin in the plant's iron starvation response on the microbiome and plant's response to pathogenic fungi. The effect is triggered by beneficial bacteria. They showed that MYB72 and BGLU42 activities influence the assembly of the Arabidopsis root microbiome by regulating the biosynthesis and exudation of the coumarine scopoletin into the rhizosphere.
