description: Not only is kidney disease silent to the patient, the general public knows little about the problem, and health-care providers might also have insufficient knowledge.1 In 2012, we estimated that 3 million deaths would occur from acute kidney injury worldwide, and called for increased public awareness and research investment.2 Based on the most recent period-prevalence studies in critically ill patients,3 our estimates are probably low since more than half of patients admitted to intensive care develop acute kidney injury, and 27% die before hospital discharge (a rate nearly four times that of patients without acute kidney injury). A global strategy to address acute kidney injury should also address acute kidney disease, and these efforts should involve all levels of health care and include input from primary care providers and subspecialists.
