Whereas the performances of the patients (n=22) and controls (n=15) were similar, cerebral activations were significantly increased in the patients, particularly in the thalamus/basal ganglia for the two tasks and in regions of the prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum for the spatial task only. Our results suggest that stronger activations of deep brain structures in patients may be the result from a compensating mechanism for WM difficulties.
